Can poor posture affect your height?

Did you know poor posture may make you look shorter than you actually are. Your posture is a very important factor when it comes to reaching your “true height”. Over time your poor posture can provoke your body to slump and slouch which can actually stunt your actual height.

Our back is curved naturally and regular slumping or slouching can shift the curves to adjust to your familiar posture. This can further strain your neck and back and you may feel pain around these areas as time goes by.

Good posture not only elevates stress and pain in your neck and back but it can change your physical height. A straight back will allow you to stand as much as two inches taller. In comparison to walking with rounded shoulders and a hunched back, poor posture  can lead to permanent loss of height in the long run if it is not addressed.

Some tips to maintain good posture:

  • When walking keep your back straight, head up and shoulders down and widened out (prevent wearing heaving items when carrying a bag)

  • When sitting keep your back straight and ensure you are not slouching over time (be aware of your posture and put in effort in keeping a straight back)

  • While standing spread your legs stand straight whilst keeping your hands as close to your body. (prevent putting your hands in your pocket as it can lead to slouching of the shoulders).

The way we position our bodies whilst we are sitting, walking, sleeping or standing can have a strong impact on how tall we appear. Although poor posture is one the external factors which can influence your height, your mental health and postural habits also contribute to your overall stature.

Other factors which can affect your height include:

  • Stress

  • Body Weight

  • Footwear

  • Sleeping Habits

  • Low-self esteem

  • Sitting and standing habits
